Air Force
Airman 1st Class, John DeWane. After Boot Camp and Advanced Training, John was sent to England where he served for 3 years. The 17th Air Force under the Royal Air Force in Sculthorpe England would be his major assignment. His primary occupation was with the 47th Motor Vehicle Squadron. Being of Irish Catholic decent, his son insisted to include the crucifix in his display. I enjoy including these special personal items!
Airman 1st Class, Peter Dawley. Peter served stateside for the total 4 years of his enlistment. A Jet Engine Mechanic with training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. He worked at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire for over 3 years. Being from Massachusetts, this was particularly good duty. At Pease, the Strategic Air Command had plenty of work for a mechanic in jet engines. The 817th Combat Support Group included the B-47, K-C97 and C-130 among others.
Richard Carney, my brother and the oldest of 7 children. Richard was with the Tactical Air Command between 1961-1965. His occupational specialty was in the clerical field to include records and finance. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1965 as an Airman 1st Class. A few tears later he joined the Maine National Guard, 133rd Engineer Battalion. This unit did a lot of earth moving. The 133rd spent a couple weeks in Guatemala, helping to build a school and ballfield. Rick would spend most of his time at drills, driving jeeps and trucks. Panama and Canade would also receive services from the 133rd during his time with the Guards. Richard retired from a combined military career as Sargent.
